The phrase used to provoke anxiety and derision in me - an eye-roll at the very least. I couldn’t imagine myself as a “happy home-maker”. Yet here I am - reflecting on the projects I’m building and the many I’ve completed over the years - realizing they are all about making home.
Home Making
Whether it’s my new one-woman performance - There is a Portal - which looks to the collective ties that bind us to create new definitions of belonging and activism (fall dates TBA) ... or
The Path Home, my video-based storytelling project that focuses on the relationships built and human impact of the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act - aka amnesty (NYC event Friday June 21 - the women activists of the ILGWU) ... and
Desta, my April phul!
My most expansive project yet - that of being a mother! I gave birth to my son, Desta, on April 1st and my heart has transformed completely. I am changing into a new person and its mind blowing.
I now appreciate the profound shifts that can come from looking to the rhythms and patterns that sustain and nourish.
Iin the coming months I will launch a crowdfunding campaign (thanks to the support of a fellowship I just completed with Gibney Dance) that will gather resources so the show can move into educational and community spaces that serve immigrant and refugee youth.
Can I can count on you to help it succeed?
Send me a note of support and I’ll cash it in later! And also tell me what you are nurturing or what nourishes you?
As always, from my heart to yours, there is a portal.
Del beh del rah dareh.
